​Aunt Peck always held Thanksgiving because they had a very large dining room table. However, given there were a great many kids, they would set up another table for us in the living room. I never liked Thanksgiving as we grew up. I found certain members of the extended family to be highly arrogant and annoying. And it was always noisy with everyone talking over one another.
I much preferred to just visit my Aunt and Uncle on my own. They were very kind and loving.

Annoying Cousins from hell are rightfully assaulted

Anna had just finished the last roll of wallpaper when Claire announced a man had come in the house.
“Who is it?” Anna asked. Claire knew most of the townspeople from church.
“I don’t know, but he was mean to me,” Claire muttered and gnawed her thumb.
Anna climbed down the ladder. “He was mean to you?” she repeated, unable to think how a person could be mean to such a precious child. “I’m sure he didn’t mean to be. Let’s go straighten it out.”
Claire shook her head. She clearly didn’t want to see the man again.
“Okay, then you stay here, and I’ll go straighten it out.” Anna entered the living room and wondered if the mean man had given up and left. She looked out front and saw a black Mercedes in the driveway.
She started towards the dining room when she noticed the door to her bedroom ajar. Quietly, she stepped into her room. The man didn’t see her. He stood at her desk with his back to her. As she approached, she realized he was on her computer reviewing the web sites she had last visited.
“What are you doing?” she demanded.
The man turned around. Her cousin Dewayne’s face expressed shock at being discovered, and then righteous anger.
“I’m trying to figure out what you are doing here.”
“I’m taking care of Aunt Peck and Uncle Lee.”
His well-worn smirk appeared on his face. “Number one, they don’t require your assistance. I’m handling everything just fine. And number two, the way I understand it, they’re helping you, not the other way around.”
Anna couldn’t correct his second claim. If she did, he’d use it against her, hurting her aunt and uncle in the process. She knew he’d tell them in a way that her presence would look like charity.
Instead, she decided to attack his first argument. “Well you haven’t been handling things. This place was falling apart. The roof could have gone any time!”
“They don’t have money to spend on a new roof.”
“I send them money every month. Why couldn’t you use that?”
Dewayne smirked. “You ain’t never sent them a dime and you know it. And now you’re down here eatin’ their last crumb of food from their plate. Well, I’m telling you right now, I’m not going to allow it! I want you packed and gone by tomorrow!”
“Not happening, Dewayne,” Anna snapped.
“Don’t you dare argue with me!” His face turned blood red and his hand rose as if to strike her, but she stopped him with her next warning.
“If you lay one hand on me, you will regret it.”
Dewayne paused, then lowered his hand as he approached her. “I don’t know how you conned my uncle into letting you stay here, but I’m telling you now, you aren’t going to succeed in this little scam.”
 “Get out of my room,” Anna demanded.
“This is not your room.”
Anna grabbed him by the collar and slammed him against the door. “As long as I’m here, it’s my room, and you will stay out of it. Is that clear enough or do you require a memo?”

Skye tapped her feet impatiently as she looked at the ominous grey clouds hovering above the playground and tried to rein in the anger she could feel blazing in her chest. She had learned the skill of outwardly controlling her emotions and appearing like she hadn’t a care in the world long ago, but if her son came out of school crying because a more boisterous kid had poured water on his head, or scribbled all over his carefully written work again, then she would struggle not to pick the culprit up by his leg and throw him into the neatly manicured flowerbeds that surrounded the glossy green windowsills of the school building.
She noticed the quiet red-haired woman who was sitting on a nearby bench, glancing longingly at the same group of school mums again. They were all huddled together like a rugby scrum, chatting busily about their day. Skye wondered why the redhead didn’t get up and join them if she wanted to be part of the group so badly, but she could tell from the woman’s body language that it was never going to happen. She obviously lacked the confidence or courage to break into such a tight-knit group of friends.
A movement to Skye’s left caught her eye and she noticed the woman with the mop of curly hair and inquisitive eyes watching her again. She was frowning in concentration before realising that she had been spotted and seamlessly blended back into the throng of people waiting for their children to appear.

Carys reached for Esmé’s hand and gently squeezed it.
‘So, what have you done all morning?’
‘Apart from visit cafes, I’ve walked around the city, stared in shop windows and had a meltdown when I found myself in the crime section at Waterstones…’ Esmé coughed as a wave of nausea lifted to her throat. ‘I felt fine until then. How many times has that store saved my skin with his birthday presents or stocking fillers? Not anymore. Those days are gone.’
‘In that case, I have just the thing,’ announced Carys, releasing Esmé’s hand before rummaging in the plastic bag beneath her chair. ‘Don’t laugh, but this actually helped me through the break-up with Myles.’
‘I thought I helped you get through that.’
Carys raised her head mid-rummage, her corkscrew curls bouncing as she disagreed.
‘Nope! You know nothing about break-ups, Esmé. Seriously, your relationship has been so long-term you haven’t a clue. But this…’ Carys lifted a pink boxed object onto the table top. ‘This might help.’
‘What the hell?’ said Esmé, staring at the advent calendar styled object with its tiny perforated doors.
‘It’s 100 per cent tack and it only cost a fiver but—’
‘Carys?’
‘Hear me out, Esmé… it’s worth a laugh if nothing else.’
‘Yeah, sure,’ said Esmé, lifting the calendar to read the blurb on the reverse.

Evonne Wareham was born in Barry on the South Wales coast, but spent most of her working life in London. Now home again in Wales she is studying for a PhD in History and writing romance. She was a finalist in two reality writing contests in the United States and had a great time, even if she didn’t win. Two saplings had fallen, perhaps in a recent storm, and one had caught between two larger trees creating a perfect barre at exactly the right height. How could she resist? Especially as she hadn’t worked out for several days and her muscles would already be weakening.
A blackbird screeched a warning (reminding her of the Ballet Master) as she began to warm up her neck, shoulders and arms before moving in to pliés, ensuring that her back remained straight.
The forest was alive, a living being. The light leaking through the upper foliage was golden, an autumnal glow that was filled with dancing seeds, gossamer webs and tiny flies. It brought to mind the music the taxi driver had played on their way to Aurora. The melody of The Moody Blues’ Forever Autumn once again filled her mind, and again she imagined herself dancing in a floaty fine tunic amid falling leaves of all shades and hues of autumn. She worked through the routine of tendus and degagés as the music played in her head. She slowed into a final deep stretch, touching her toes. How good it felt to exercise her muscles again.
As she straightened, ready to try the routine again, her attention was caught by a movement, and she was in time to see a figure in the trees slide into the shadows.
“Marco?” she said, her voice low.
He came into the clearing and gave her a small nod.
“Were you watching me?”
He looked away. “Maybe.”

Susan Roebuck was born and bred in the soft south of the UK but was exported to Portugal after meeting her husband in London. She now lives overlooking the mighty Tagus River which is a wonderful source of inspiration.
She loves being in her adopted country and believes that Portugal has a huge heart, which the world should know more about. Portugal also doesn’t appear in many English-language novels and Susan hopes that, now, that will change.
“Forest Dancer” is her fourth novel but it is her second one set in Portugal (in the forests near Lisbon).
“Rising Tide” was her first book (third one published) set in Portugal, in a tiny fishing village on the beautiful, rugged Alentejo coast. One of the themes of this book is man against the sea.
They are both contemporary romance/suspense stories.
Her first novel was “Perfect Score”, set in 1960s USA and is a LGBT romance/suspense covering many social issues of the time – including having to cope with dyslexia.
“Hewhay Hall” is a dark fantasy which won the EPIC (Electronic Publishing Industry Coalition) Award in 2013 in their horror category.
