Like the Sunset - Poem
And men fall over their feet to please her
She bedazzles and enthrals
With lips crimson or coral red
Flashing scarlet today, hot pink tomorrow
Making her forget her own sorrow
She flutters her lids and breaks a heart
She slowly tears your world apart
For like the sunset she is out of reach
So close you want to touch and taste
Want to throw yourself headlong into the magic
But she is so far away it's tragic
Like the sunset she walks
Dressed in colours so fiery they burn
Making every head turn
Chili red heals and orange nails
Rosy pink cheeks and ginger hair
And her essence lingers in the air
Long after she has left the room
Like the sunset dispelling the gloom
For a heady moment of bliss and daring
Until you're intoxicated and way past caring
That there will never be more than a fleeting moment
That unbridled passion leads into dark and despair
That with a toss of her long, red golden hair
She'll turn and sashay away to fade into nothingness
Like the sunset she bewitches
Until you stop and stare and feel like crying
Hanging on until the colours are dying
Praying for just a little more heavenly fire
Not knowing that this is her funeral pyre
And that she dies a little death
With every sultry look and gasping breath
That like the sunset she heralds an end
That each display of temperament
Is ultimately meant to defend
The softness of a body having been used
The soreness of a soul having been abused
Like the sunset she walks away
Leaving behind a sense of dismay
That life's pleasures are short and uncertain
That at night she closes the curtain
To keep the monsters at bay
Who see right through her colourful display
And know her for the lost wanderer
Who belongs neither to day nor to night
Who is constantly on the flight
Who like the sunset is admired so openly
But reveals her true value
Only to those who look beyond the obvious
And realize that like the sun setting each day
For her there is just no other way
Than to give herself up and offer all she's got
To give it her very best shot
And abandon herself to the way nature works
Although in the end all that remains
Is more hurt and the dire knowledge
That tomorrow will inevitably be
Just another waste of energy
